Eureka Springs (eurekasprings.com) was one of those places with lots of springs which became a draw for people who thought the springs had healing powers. After the Civil War, the town became a vacation resort, booming after the railroad was extended to town. The town grew to be the fourth largest in Arkansas at one time. The Victorian houses are perched on steep slopes on winidng roads. The Crescent Hotel was the luxury spot. It is still in business. Parts of the town burned about four times. In the rebuilding, some sidewalks became underground. It used to have a number of shows also, but Branson, MO, became the bigger draw. There are still a large number of hotels. Eureka appears to be a popular destination for motorcycles and there are several rallys each year. Beaver Lake is also a recent nearby attraction.
